Image
Do you tend to see the glass as half empty or half full? You have probably heard that question plenty of times. Your answer relates directly to the concept of positive thinking and whether you have a positive or negative outlook on life. Positivity doesn’t always refer to simply smiling and looking cheerful, however positivity is more about one’s overall perspective on life and their tendency to focus on all that is good in life. Positive mindset as the tendency to focus on the bright side, expect positive results, and approach challenges with a positive outlook. Having a positive mindset means making positive thinking a habit, continually searching for the silver lining and making the best out of any situation you find yourself in. CELEBRITIES AND DRUG ABUSE

Image
Hello everyone, today we would be talking about abuse of substance by celebrities. Its no new to us that many celebrity both home and  abroad have been been in and out of rehab as a result of drug use. We would therefore start by taking about what drug abuse is and even among celebrities, why they use drugs and the effect it has generally and then finally the treatment methods. Drug abuse refers to the compulsive, excessive, and self-damaging use of habit forming drugs or substances, leading to addiction or dependence, serious physiological injury (such as damage to kidneys, liver, heart) and/or psychological harm (such as dysfunctional behavior patterns, hallucinations, memory loss), or death. Also called substance abuse, the illicit use of these substances plays a major role in many social problems, such as drugged driving, violence, stress, and child abuse. This can lead to homelessness, crime, and missed work or problems with keeping a job. The consistent and cont...

Suicide Prevention

Image
Hello everyone, still on the suicide matter ooo... I am sure we must have heard of the phrase "Prevention is better than cure". There is no two ways about it, prevention sure saves us a lot of future stress and even at a lesser cost. Check out all the big big ailments today, you would realize that just a little instruction or diet or something of that sort would have saved the person from any of it today. It is in that light I will be discussing about how we can prevent suicide. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, suicide doesn't just happen, it follows a chain of events which ends with the act of taking ones own life. Conscious effort must be made towards preventing suicide. These efforts must be comprehensive, integrated and synergistic, as no single approach can impact alone on an issue as complex as suicide. Therefore, suicide prevention requires a vision, a plan and a set of strategies. On the part of the individual experiencing suicidal thoughts or attemp...

Suicide in Children

Image
Hello everyone, today I bring to you a topic I find very saddening to share. This happens even in our very own country however low the rate is at present. It would be short and precise. The death of a child is always a heartbreaking tragedy, but when a child dies from suicide it brings a whole other level of grief that effects society as a whole.  Fortunately, suicide in children is relatively rare. Though, in saying that, on average, approximately 33 children under 12 kill themselves each year in the US alone. The rate is on the increase though considering the current rate of suicide in the world today. A lot of factors has been known as possible causes of child suicide and they range from experiencing child abuse, being bullied, being forced to marry, having very low self-worth. This and even more are possible reasons for suicide in children.  Although very little research has been conducted on this topic, but one shocking and recent finding is that only about ...

Depression: The Silent Killer (Final Part)

Image
Hello everyone, thank you all for the positive feedback and for those who mentioned that I should discuss a bit more about some specific areas of depression, I sure would do that as time goes on and very soon as well, so keep checking this space and keep sharing as well. The awareness of our mental health/status is very important, but we all have a part to play in spreading the word as you may be saving someone. So today, I would be concluding the topic we started last week with a brief about the causes of depression and the possible treatments. The causes of depression aren’t farfetched. Although they are a results from a combination of genetic, biologic, environmental, and psychological factors. The genetic makeup of an individual may play a complex role in setting the level of sensitivity to certain kinds of events, including the level of nervous system reacting to stress and other challenges. It doesn’t mean that depression cannot occur in people without family histories....

Depression: The Silent Killer

Image
Hello everyone, today I would be writing on one issue I consider a major precedence to suicide. DEPRESSION! In our earlier article titled “Suicidal Ideation: The Pathway to Suicide”, it was brought to the fore that depression can lead to suicidal thoughts and if not well tackled well would lead to suicidal attempt. I am sure if I am to take a survey on what many people refer to as depression most would say being sad or low mood which to an extent is true as these are symptoms of a person who is depressed. Scientifically speaking, depression is much more than mere low mood or what we call “mood swings” at a point in time. Therefore, this article would be bringing to our knowledge what really it means to be diagnosed with depression (i.e. as a disorder), the various types of depression, some of the causes and then when and how to get help. Depression is one of the major psychological problem in our world today. According to the National Institutes of Health, each...

The Broken Heart Syndrome

Image
Hello Guys, today I would be talking to those people who are in a relationship (marriage etc)  or say in "Love". Being in love can be sweet I must say, but it can be a hell of an experience when things go wrong, I have had my fair share a couples times and trust me it isn't palatable at all. But it could get a lot worse! I am using the captivating piece by Haenulin Shin to talk about heartbreak and the more severe state of 'Broken Heart Syndrome' that follows sometimes. Broken heart syndrome is a temporary heart condition that's often brought on by stressful situations, such as been left by a loved one or death of a loved one. The condition can also be triggered by a serious physical illness or surgery. People with broken heart syndrome may have sudden chest pain or think they're having a heart attack. About 1 in 10 patients with broken heart syndrome experiences cardiogenic shock. And the majority of them are women. Love can be messy, passion...
