SOCIAL MEDIA: ITS IMPACT ON MENTAL WELL-BEING

Image
Hello everyone,  Over one decade, social media has become a household name, especially since the advent of Facebook in the mid-2000s. You would agree with me that social media has since grown and become a powerful tool for expression of interest, education, lifestyle and even determining public opinion on both trivial and serious issues like the next president of a nation. However, social media might be viewed as a "double-edged sword." It has aided people in expressing their thoughts and feelings and receiving social support; nevertheless, it has also been related to psychological difficulties. It is therefore important that we understand how social media can impact our well-being as its increasingly negative impact is becoming worrisome.   Let me start by stating that social media use influences people's mental well-being in light of building social support and connection. People can utilise social media to deepen ties with existing friends and create new friendships on...

Body Image: Beauty in your Skin

Image
When you look at your body, what do you think, how do you feel and how do you react because of your body? The answer you give to yourself is what we call Body Image. We all have unique and different ways we visualize our bodies. It is so because we are simply different people, from different backgrounds, societies, families, etc. which will contribute to what we think is the most ideal body type. Sometimes, they may see themselves realistically, however, some may see themselves in a different way to how others see them. Today we would be talking briefly about why you need to find beauty in your body, and your skin and how it can positively affect your mental health. Essentially, people may likely get a sense of inadequacies and other negative emotions if they believe their body/skin does not match the ideal body that they have in their mind. Sometimes, preoccupations with this thought can lead to bigger problems like body dysmorphic disorder. I would explain that; body dysmorphic disor...

Marriage and Divorce

Image
In today's world, people get validation by showing off their marital status. Some go into marriage for economic reasons, political reasons and or to strengthen a lifelong prestige with families. If you ask me, I would say the essence of marriage is getting lost as the years roll by that even venturing into that fairyland becomes a dread to many of us. And so if the essence of a thing is lost, then there is going to be a lot of problem with handling it. Some people even have bragging rights over being in the shortest marriage in the world... Unbelievable! Looking back at the design of marriage for humans, it was meant to foster love, companionship and for many procreation. Even around the globe, many people celebrate St. Valentine's day, if you must know, the reason for that day was because one person defiled all odds and rules to continue to strengthen what he believes was the will of God for mankind... Marriage. Be you a Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, atheist, etc., there is tha...

LAUGHTER AND WELL-BEING

Image
Hello everyone, it feels good to be back again with this topic which I feel is interesting and enlightening. I am sure many of you reading this must have heard the slogan "laughter is the best medicine". For a moment I had to ask myself why is laughter referred to as medicine. Can it really heal? The answer is not far off you know...Why would someone pay so much money to go watch a live comedy show? By the way, comedians are making a lot of money from making you and me laugh. Why are there so many skit makers springing up everywhere around the world? This is because laughter has a lot of potency to the point that it has now been commercialized or monetized. We all laugh; some more than others, but it is a universal human characteristic. It makes people happy and brings them together.  Although there is some controversy about whether laughter is a learnt or innate trait, most experts will reluctantly admit that laughter is not a learned behaviour. Laughter is universal, despit...

How Do I Bounce Back? Resilience

Image
Hi everyone, it feels so good to be back again ☺️ A happy new year to you all. Today, I would be talking about a very important attribute that you sure would find helpful and would go a long way in building your toughness especially in the wake of the COVID-19 second wave.  Have you ever wondered why some people seem to remain calm in the face of disaster and others appear to be really disturbed? Psychologists call people that can keep their cool in the face of adversity as resilient people. What is this resilience and why do I need it? Psychological resilience is the ability to mentally or emotionally cope with a crisis or to return to the pre-crisis status quickly. It entails how well we bounce back from difficulties of life. Dealing with change or loss is an inevitable part of life. At some point in life everyone would experience varying degrees of setbacks. Some of these challenges might be relatively minor (trying to meet up with deadline), while others are disastrous on a muc...

Partly Good, Partly Bad: Holiday Stress

Image
Good day everyone, hope you are all doing well? Thanks to all those who made comments on the last post and recommendations as well, I appreciate you. Sadly, this would be the final article for the year.   I do hope I have been able to enlighten you in one way or the other J  and  I do promise to come back with more interesting topics next year.  Today I would briefly discuss with you how to possibly reduce the stress associated with holidays. Yeah, you can actually get so stressed out because of the holidays activities and events. The holiday season is supposed to be a time to relax and have fun, a special time meant to be spent with family and friends as a way to reflect back on the year. However, in reality, the holidays come filled with stress of all varieties. There are obligations from family, friends and sometimes work that all need attention and in the end the holidays may end up feeling more like a burden than a chance to recuperate.  ...

Searching for Closure

Image
Hello everyone, it feels good to share another topic with you again. Today I will be shedding light on the above topic which of course would benefit almost everyone or anyone in any form of relationship, and even for those who are yet to but need to know what to do when they find themselves in such situation. “If I could only speak to him” ... "If she'd had just told me why it was over, rather than ghosting me"... These are statements that may bring one to finding closure. Closure is knowing the reason a romantic relation was terminated and no longer feeling emotional attachment or pain, thereby allowing for the establishment of new and healthy relationships. Finding closure is difficult. Without closure many people report feeling like they're unable to move past their grief. This is why it is important to be honest with your reasons when breaking up with someone. Now if your partner refuses to give you closure after you have repeatedly asked for it, ask y...
